Take Your Temperature (Ear)The best way to tell if you have a fever is to take your temperature. To get an accurate result, one of the mostcommon ways to take your temperature is to use a digital ear thermometer.Try it now. Step 1. Wash your hands with soap and warm water before taking your temperature. Step 2. Turnon the thermometer. Step 3. Pull the ear back and up and gently place the thermometer in your ear canal,aiming the tip of the probe between the opposite eye and ear. Do not insert it more deeply than indicated in thethermometer’s directions.Step 4. Hold the thermometer in your ear until the reading is done. Most thermometers will beep to let knowwhen it’s finished. If you are keeping track, write down your results. For adults, a temperature of 100.4 degreesFahrenheit is considered a fever. If your fever reaches 102 degrees Fahrenheit or higher and medications don’tlower it, call your healthcare provider.Let’s try that again. Wash your hands with soap and warm water. Turn on the thermometer. Following thedirections that came with your ear thermometer gently place it in your ear canal. Hold the thermometer in yourear until the reading is complete. It should beep when it’s done.When you are done taking your temperature, clean the thermometer with soap and water, and store in a cool,dry place.
